This fly is approx. 4cm long and are lightly weighthed with a brass bead and wire on the underside of the hook shank that make the fly break the surface film easy and give you added depth control. A great all-rounder that fish well in all kinds of waters.
Mini zonkers are excellent all-round flies (attractors) and imitations when the trout hunt smaller bait fish such as minnows and perch fry, these flies are great for both lakes and rivers. A small streamer makes far less noise and has a lot less impact when it lands vs. larger and heavier flies, this gives you the opportunity to present your fly more discrete and have a more stealthy approach. This tactics can be very productive when the trout is easily spooked or when you want to trigger the fish with the moment of surprise. Trout are easily bored, and a fly that appear suddenly can be much more interesting than something they see/feel on long range.
Our favourite method in lakes are fishing from the shore, sneaking around with long leader and gentle presentations where we think/know the fish is. You don’t need to place your fly at the same spot over and over, spread out the casts i different directions. A bonus with this design is that these flies can be used with lighter tackle in #4-5, so you don’t need to bring a dedicated streamer outfit if you want to have a break in the dry fly fishing. We like to use a #5wt rod, floating line and 18ft leader for this kind of fishing. You can also use the same rig in the river if it's not too deep. An effective method in the river is to cast well upstream where you expect the fish to be, and a little further out, let the fly sink on the way down to the fish (dead drift, drag free) and right before the fly approach the fish you start the retrieve.
