A winged imitation of this is a super all-rounder for the whole season, although they like to swarm in the spring and early summer in Europe. In Scandinavia, it is quite typical that they start swarming on sunny days when the first heat comes in the spring, preferably in early / mid-May. And they can keep on all summer long depending on the height above sea level etc. The trout that have eaten these do not forget it so easily and an imitation can fish well for weeks after there has been a swarm, even though it can be sparse between the swarms of this ant species. Ants are a must have in the box!
Rufa Flying Ant is a killer ant pattern that fishes excellently during swarming, and throughout the season as a fish finder on opportunistic trout. Threat it with cdc-friendly floatant such as TMC Dry Magic or our CDC Gel. Apply first on the body, then the hackle, and the little that is left you put on the wing.
